Since the inception of social media, western society has been subjected to a free fall into the world of gossip, envy, and distraction.
Every single day we are able to log onto whatever social media platform we are addicted to and watch the curated version of life that our friends, acquaintances and favorite social media influencers are living.
If we are to trust the data that is provided to us from the experts, it is suggested that the average person in America spend roughly 4 hours a day nurturing this addiction.
4 hours a day watching the life of someone else.
Just think about that for a moment.
It is fascinating to me to objectively step back and watch how so many people are wondering what everyone else is doing with their lives when their very life is passing by.
What is even more fascinating to me is that most people approach their posting strategy on social media to amplify the number of clicks and likes they get from their community to the point that they will even choose where they vacation to ensure that they get the maximum engagement.
Can you imagine limiting your experience of life because you are afraid that the community you are surrounded by will judge you by where you choose to vacation with your family.
WOW.
FOMO is very much alive in our culture
As the title of this reflection states, we need to slowly stop wasting our time on the affairs of others and start reinvesting our time into our own lives.
Time is a precious commodity that we cannot reclaim once it is gone.
It is a fleeting moment and if it is wasted on the affairs of others, that is a missed opportunity for you to participate in the goodness that comes from creating your own life.
Yes I understand that it is fascinating to see how people are choosing to live their lives but the longer I spend away from the social media endless doom scrolling the more I firmly believe that we need to reclaim our time and our sanity and put FOMO to bed.
I cannot imagine a time where I would choose what I post on social media based upon how my immediate community will react.
Nor can I imagine choosing to change my entire life with my family to plan our day based upon how social media engagement will react.
We all have the same 24 hours and how we choose to cultivate them will determine our outlook on the world.
Will yours be one that is spent living someone else’s life, starving for attention and cultural acceptance through the lens of a manipulated and curated environment?
OR
Will yours be one in which you live life on your own terms, nurturing curiosity with your family and spending time developing your own beautiful memories.
The choice is yours.
Remember, it’s 4:45 AM, a time I specifically pick to build life on my own terms. Not for social media likes and not because it is culturally acceptable (if anything it does the exact opposite of getting clicks and likes). So I ask you, how have you stopped wasting your time on the affairs of others to Make your Monday Great Again?
P.S.: I don’t make any posts on social media. So if you know someone who can benefit from this content, please do us a favor and share it with them. You never know how far reaching what you may think, say, or do today will affect the lives of millions tomorrow.
