Growing up I always had a fascination with the Piano.
Maybe it was because we had a stand up Piano in our house or that all of my grandparents knew how to play it, regardless it was an instrument that captured my attention.
I can remember being in 1st grade and begging my mom to sign me up for Piano lessons because I wanted to become the next Beethoven ( realistically I probably just wanted to play to get the attention of my grandparents the next time I saw them).
Back then, the place to go was Brook Mays Music (might be dating myself here haha) and after months of lessons the best I could do was Hot Cross Buns and I knew that the lines were EGBDF and the spaces were FACE.
Then I quit.
You see, there is a massive difference between an interest and a commitment.
When you are interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient.
When you are committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.
Now that you know this, you can see that the Piano was mainly a short term interest.
Not something I was determined to commit the rest of my life to mastering.
Let’s now take the opportunity to apply this to the majority of Americans.
We know that we are fat, sick and nearly dead.
That is a given just by stepping back at your local grocery story or theme park and looking at the general population around you.
If asked, I’d suggest that most of us if not all of us actually have an interest in getting and staying healthy but we lack the commitment.
We have made it too easy.
Countless times in my office I am told by patients that they are interested in the opportunity to get healthy, however when the journey gets rocky and requires suffering and endurance, we find out who is actually committed.
The problem we face, in my opinion, is the Prime generation.
There are no longer periods of waiting.
We have everything on demand, instant access, and instant perceived gratification.
We are quick to forget that both health and disease require something called time.
Believe me, I too want the instant fix for all of my health desires.
But the truth is it doesn’t exist.
To achieve my own goals, I have had to commit the majority of my life to sustaining health.
As I get older, this requires more and more commitment and less interest if I want to avoid addictive pharmaceuticals, destructive surgery, life ending cancer and even Alzheimer’s.
However when most of you are asked if you want the same things you say absolutely.
BUT
It is merely an interest and not a commitment.
Thus, my challenge today to you.
If you truly want the opportunity to age gracefully free of disease and illness, you must make the commitment to health.
This commitment will not be easy.
It will force you to grow beyond having a mere interest in the latest health trends.
You will no longer surrender your health to the “expert.”
In fact you will learn to question everything the “expert” says and you will take ownership of your body.
You are 1 of 1 and you have to live inside of your body.
Interest got us to the society we live in today – fat, sick and nearly dead.
Commitment will take us to the quality of health we claim to want – health, wealth, longevity.
Only you can make the choice to commit to sustaining health.
It’s up to you to shed the idea of it just being an interest.
