One of the most often neglected and underappreciated spaces in the arena of personal excellence is time spent in silence.
With the 24/7 distraction of noise that floods our life, we rarely have time to sit back and contemplate our thoughts, emotions, dreams and most importantly our excuses.
To be quite honest, I was never really aware of this significant “hack” until 2017 when I read a book entitled “The Power of Silence: against the dictatorship of noise.”
This started a 8 year long journey of my own struggle with the uncomfortable process of exposing the many excuses and stories I had created in my life.
In fact, I would dare to say that, because of this book, I have found more appreciation for silence in my life and have sought every way possible to limit the 24/7 distraction of the modern “connected” world.
In these moments of quiet contemplation, I have slowly developed the ability to audit my thoughts on a daily basis and to most importantly write them down to expose any excuse, limitation or lie (story) I have manufactured to explain away why I have not achieved the mental, emotional and spiritual life I crave.
I then take the time to write the counter argument to the fabricated story by gathering evidence of what is actually happening to train my brain to stop traveling down the narrative of the lie and to focus on the narrative of the truth. This is the single most important piece of the process, next to the time spent in silent contemplation because it allows me to see that no matter how slow the process is going, I am still making progress.
You see, when we often start a professional development journey – whether that be with health, emotional healing, or spiritual discernment – we are met with discouragement because nothing happens fast. When I say nothing…I mean absolutely nothing.
In fact, time can pass at the pace of a snail crawling while the technology of the world is a full speed cheetah making you believe that you are not making any progress OR that the person/business you employed for guidance isn’t right because you are seeing the fruits of your labor as fast as you thought.
Which leads me to the take away for today.
Chiropractic Principle #6: There is no process that does not require time.
When you start the nitty gritty process of auditing your thoughts and exposing your excuses you will begin to see that you have manufactured a reality that is full of limitations and lies.
In order to course correct these stories, you will have to consider the weight of time and energy you have given to them. Some of these stories are going to be like April weeds in Texas…you can reach down and rip them out by their roots with ease. Others are going to be the massive oak tree with roots that are interconnected into every facet of your life.
As you pull the lies out by the roots, you will start to learn that every single aspect of your life that you are unsatisfied with slowly begins to be transformed because you will replace the lie with the truth.
As the truth is nurtured in the school of silence and contemplation, you will slowly reclaim your mental, physical, and emotional health. Then you will truly be on the path to personal excellence.
Take the time to audit your day in silence. Write down the areas that you think were difficult. Collect evidence to counter this point. Repeat daily.
Creating personal excellence is a daily commitment, one you never arrive at.
Stay the course, trust the process, embrace silence.
Remember…it’s 4:45 AM…one of the many ways I nurture silence and audit my thoughts…and if you are walking with me, wherever you are in the world, know that I am praying for you as you figure out how to nurture your roots.
Since I don’t make posts like this on social media … if there’s someone you know that would benefit from reading this, share it with them so they can start working on making their Monday great again.
