Sweat the Small Stuff

The little things

When I was an adolescent, my parents used to talk about a book called “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

It was a way to say hey, small things really don’t matter in the grand scheme.

Think 1990’s era self improvement literature.

However, as I have grown over the years, I have learned that there are certain small things that are definitely worth sweating about.

In my short 10 years in practice, I have been blessed to make a few observations that I find to be relevant to our ability to generate the desired results we want as humans.

The first observation:  you don’t go from being a huge success to a complete failure overnight

The second observation: you don’t go from being a self perceived complete failure to a huge success overnight

The brutal honesty of these two observations falls on the nature of the person.

Most people, I would argue the middle 50%, believe that overnight failure and success is just one click, one post, one livestream away.

Yet, if you go and study the most perceived “successful” people, you will learn that it was anything but an overnight success.

In fact, it was more likely a 20 year process.

You see, I recently heard that there was a reason that Christ spoke in parables – it was because to the common everyday person, these scenarios were not only easily understood but also applicable to everyday life.

Take for example the idea of a mustard seed.

It is the smallest of seeds and it grows into an enormous tree.

That didn’t happen overnight.

It took years of proper nurturing and pruning to ensure that this small seed was able to grow into the mighty tree.

What you do with the seed matters.

This is no different than our life.

We are given a mind, body and soul (the metaphorical mustard seeds).

How we choose to nurture each one of these “seeds” with the small stuff will determine what we become down the road.

If you feed your mind the seed of fear, you will cultivate an anxious and overstimulated personality.

If you feed your body the seed of inflammation, you will find yourself obese with multiple health problems.

If you feed your soul anything but the Truth, you will find yourself restless in nature.

The problem is most people won’t recognize and adjust their poor habits until it’s too late.

You see, the mustard seed has no idea what type of tree it is going to become.

It is just a seed.

But the gardner who tends the seed, hopefully with his or her experience, knows exactly what small things need to be done to ensure it matures into a strong tree.

The take away today, the small things matter especially when you are aiming to cultivate a well rounded expression of health that is complete in mind, body and soul.

If you choose to embrace the idea of “don’t sweat the small stuff” you may find yourself cast onto the rocky soil where you develop shallow roots and as soon as the heat is turned up, you wither and burn – (the people who believe in the one click away analogy of success)

The secret sauce lies in actually sweating the small stuff that you feed and nurture to your mind, body and soul every single minute of every single day for the next 20 years.

If done properly, the small stuff will be exactly what makes you into the “overnight success.”

Sweat the small stuff…
